LUKE 5

This wineskin thing always gets me!  Jesus fills up two boats worth of fish, a leper gets healed and Jesus says, "Don't tell anyone", people are coming from everywhere to hear You speak and the only thing I can think of is those damn wineskins.

The first example You use clothes - don't put a old patch on new clothes.  I get it - new clothes are better.  Then, You say, you don't put new wine into old wineskins because it will seep through.  But wine gets better with age (even in Jesus' time, I Googled it!), so wouldn't you put old wine in new wineskins since it's the good stuff.  Although the old wine would have already been in wineskins - it's not like there was wine in a jar and then they would transport it to wineskins.  (Googled it!). So, that makes sense too.  You're saying new has to go with new.

But then, You say that no one who drinks the new wine likes it better.  They prefer the old.  That also makes sense considering how wine gets better with age.  BUT IT MAKES NO SENSE FROM A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE!

Our old hearts that are focused on ourselves can not go together with Your teachings.  When the Pharisees were teaching about eye for an eye, and punishment for sins, and following their authority - no problem, keep the selfish heart.  That meshes.  But, forgiveness of sins, loving your enemy, sacrifice - that won't go in a heart that is only concerned about #1.

So, why do You talk about everyone liking the old?  Are you trying to roast the Pharisees?  OK, I think I get it - You're saying that everyone who drinks the old wine (has been following the Pharisees rules for spiritual life) does not like what You are saying.  They want to keep it the same as it's always been.  And knowing You a little bit, you intentionally put it after the wineskin thing to really make people think about it.  Mission accomplished!

GENESIS 13-18, MATTHEW 5-6

The winter Metra crowd is a lot different!  People plying music without headphones, talking loudly - it’s like the L! I was looking forward...
