Now that I've finished the book of Luke, I'm going to try something new - reading the book of Luke! But, check out this twist - a chapter at a time. (Makes it a little harder to focus on one thing - so I won't).
Can you imagine if this happened today? An older lady gets pregnant and her husband goes mute as soon as they find out. Then, another lady gets pregnant, but it's not from the father. It's not from any one. When the first one is born, the father can speak again. Would people think that was God like they did as recorded by Luke? Or would they think everyone was crazy?
How about the different reactions? Zechariah asks an angel how can this be. OK, your wife is older and I'm not sure how things worked back then, but I bet angels did not appear all that often. So, I can see where he might have some questions. But, he's a leader in the temple. He's literally in the holy of holies - seems like he, of all people, should haver recognized this was an angel, and when an angel tells you something I fell like you believe it.
Elizabeth gets the news and goes into hiding - for five months! She wants no part of people or answering questions (my opinion), and decides best thing to do is just live her life without others.
Mary definitely has some questions, but, in the end, says, "OK, You said it, I'll do it, I don't get it, but I'm all Yours." (My paraphrase - not actually in the Bible). Then, not only does she accept it, she goes on a long monologue about how great You are and how she is honored to have been chosen.
What's cool about the whole thing is this - everyone is focused on You. Whether they don't believe You, or want to hide Your news, or just thank You, everyone is praising You. So many magnifiants (looked that up).
That's what I'm taking away. Look for God to talk to you, do it, and give Him the thanks afterwards.
